The left and right small T25 screwdriver heads didn’t fit. Not sure what the problem was with the other two heads, but I just thought I’d mention this in case yours doesn’t fit straight away. I then tried a longer T25 head (entre) and it fitted perfectly. Two of my short Torx 25 screwdriver heads (left and right below) did not fit this screw easily and when I turned nothing happened. You’ll need a screwdriver with a long enough shaft – a stubby one will be too short but a normal length one should be OK.

In order to remove the outside handle you need to turn this screw anticlockwise. Inside the hole and you’ll see a T25 Torx screw inside. Hole on left side with plastic cover removed 3. The photo shows the hole that’s left after removing the cover. Use your plastic knife to prise off the cover. Open the door you want to replace the handle for and locate the black plastic cover level with the lock on the inside of the door edge. You can check the paint code for your car by referring to the sticker on the inside of the driver’s door frame – you’ll find the corresponding colour charts online. I found a set of four from a car breakers for £20. A screwdriver with a medium/long shaft and T25 Torx head. Here’s what I did to replace just our exterior handles. There’s plenty of information out there on the internet about doing that.

Replacing the lock is a bigger job and requires taking the inside door panel off to access the full lock and inside of the door. Just to emphasise that this post is about replacing damaged exterior handle covers, not about replacing the actual lock mechanism. There isn’t much information out there on the internet about replacing these but it turns out that it is pretty straightforward job – even for a novice. The door handles on one side of our Ford Focus got caught on a gatepost and both got scratched. The scratched handles on our Ford Focus Mark 2
